Equitable. Culturally responsive. Authentically challenging. Supporting educators with the practices, ideas, and tools to get there.
About
I started my teaching career immediately after a December graduation, taking over for a teacher who had been fired mid-year due to poor classroom management. I was a whopping five years older than my students and I still have nightmares about my 5th-period class from that year.
Twenty-seven years, three states, and a whole lot of science later — Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, and Computer Technology — I made the shift from the classroom to the district level, supporting teachers as an Ed Tech Instructional Coach for Aurora Public Schools in Colorado. These days, I work as a Digital Learning Consultant for the National Education Association, and through Ed Tech’Niques, I take on consulting work that keeps me close to the thing I love most: helping educators make technology actually work for them.
My philosophy is pretty simple: start with the verb. What do you want your learners to do? The tool — if there even needs to be one — follows from there. After 30+ years in public education, I’ve seen enough shiny-object ed tech come and go to know that relevant, responsive learning experiences don’t come from a platform. They come from intentional design.
When I’m not thinking about learning experiences, I’m thinking about equity, travel, golf, and football. Specifically, my beloved Longhorns and Broncos.
